Nano Engineering & Storage Technologies Research Group
Who are we?
The Nano Engineering & Storage Technologies (NEST) reseach group (formerly the Electronic & Information Storage Systems Research Group) has research interests in nano fabrication for data storage and advanced sensors applications. The group is based in the Information Technology (IT) Building in the School of Computer Science at The University of Manchester. The group has at its disposal an extensive suite of facilities which now form part of the Manchester Centre for Mesoscience and Nanotechnology (CMN) operated jointly by the Schools of Computer Science and Physics & Astronomy. The CMN facilities are based in the group's extensive clean room suite (class 1000, class 100 and class 10 under hoods) and offers a wide range of facilities for the fabrication, visualisation and characterisation of structures and devices containing individual elements from a few microns down to 10 nm in size.
Our Research
Our research encompasses many aspects including the development of extensive simulation and analysis tools, the fabrication of novel media for both storage and sensor applications, experimental analysis of storage and sensor systems and the analysis of systems for data storage applications.
Broadly our research can divided into the following areas:
- Magnetic and Optical Recording
- Sensors, Actuators and Instrumentation
- Nanotechnology
- Scanning Microscopy
- Electronic Systems
More information can be found on our research pages.
Our work is supported through a variety of sources including EPSRC, DTI, EU and INSIC.
We are founder members of the UK Data Storage Networkwhich has been formed to encourage closer collaboration between members with research expertise from both academic and industrial backgrounds.
