Manchester Centre for Mesoscience & Nanotechnology (CMN)

IT Building

The nanoworkshop has been initiated following a £1.4 million SRIF (HEFCE) award followed by multi-million pound investment from the University of Manchester, EPSRC & The Wolfson Foundation and was officially opened by Lord Sainsbury on 7th April 2003.

The goal of the centre is to create an easy-to-access-and-use, multidisciplinary workshop with extensive facilities, that allows researchers to fabricate, visualise and characterise structures and devices containing individual elements from a few microns down to 10 nm in size. The facility is specially designed for advanced multidisciplinary research such that researchers with little previous experience in nanotechnology could use it to join and collaborate with those already active and experienced in the subject.

The centre is based on the ground floor of the Information Technology building within the School of Computer Science, and housed in a suite of Class 100 to Class 1000 clean-rooms covering a total area of 200 m2.

The collaborative nature makes the facility really unique and has already initiated a large number of projects from many schools in the University. Emphasis will be on a niche area in nanotechnology, which lies between the so-called "bottom-up" and "top-down" approaches and remains probably the least explored, yet most close to possible applications.

Centre Director: Prof A. K. Geim (School of Physics & Astronomy)
Facilities Director: Dr E. W. Hill (School of Computer Science)

PhD Studentships in Nanoscience - NOWNANO

CMN is proud to be involved with the North West Nanoscience Doctoral Training Centre (NOWNANO), which brings together world-leading research in all areas of nanoscience within Manchester and Lancaster Universities. Through NOWNANO, PhD students will receive initial training that will show the breadth and potential of nanoscience, before focusing on a relevant research project. If you are interested in applying for a studentship, details can be found on the NOWNANO website.
