Current Mentors

James Naish

Picture of James Naish I'm in the Software Systems Group looking at how our understanding of human expertise can influence the techniques and tools we develop to support software engineering activities. In particular, I'm interested in the relationship between the reuse by experts of knowledge gained through past experience, and the use of patterns (explicit representations of tried and tested solutions to recurring problems). I've now been in Manchester for five years. I studied my undergraduate degree at UMIST/Manchester, having joined the last intake of UMIST students before the merger. Between 2006 and 2007 I worked at Mars in Berkshire (manufacturer of Snickers, Maltesers and Pedigree Chum dog food) managing manufacturing control systems for a vending machine factory. Since returning to Manchester, I've become actively involved in the wider student community. I write regularly for Student Direct, present a show on Fuse FM (the University's radio station) and am the treasurer for one of the University's societies.
