Introductory Unix Labs
Document last updated: 30 September 2009

John Latham, Graham Gough and Ian Watson

Note: the work contained in this document is intended to occupy you for 3 separate sessions of approximately 2 hours in length. Please do not rush through the work.

Note: the second session requires you to use a USB pen drive. If you have one then please remember to bring it, or if you are intending to purchase one then try to do so before that session.

These labs are to introduce you to the Unix operating system and X window system which run on many PCs and workstations in the School; some of the information contained in this document is specific to the setup here in the CS school, but most applies to any Unix system. They can only provide a very brief introduction to several aspects of what is a very rich computing environment, but they do point you toward other sources of information, which we hope you will use as a basis for your own extensive independent exploration. The computing environment described here is one in which you will be spending a lot of time over the next few years, so take a good look around and make yourself at home.

If you find any mistakes in this document or have any suggestions for improvements or additions, please contact the
authors.

Will you please make sure your work is signed off with a demonstrator for each of the sessions so that we know what you have completed.
